Breast Surgery

What is Breast Surgery?

Breast surgery includes surgical procedures for benign conditions like  breast lumps, Nipple discharge and dilated ducts, gynaecomastia, etc and for malignant conditions like carcinoma , sarcoma. In benign conditions, treatment involves removal of the lump or the affected ducts in one area or entire quadrant of breast depending on the disease involvement. In cancer treatment, it involves removing the tumor and some surrounding tissue, which is known as a lumpectomy, or removing the entire breast, known as a mastectomy. Cosmetic breast surgery can involve augmentation (enlargement), reduction, or reconstruction after a mastectomy. The surgery is performed under anesthesia and recovery time varies depending on the type and extent of the surgery. Some breast surgeries can be performed to  reduce cancer risk, or as reconstructive surgeries. Surgeons also remove nearby lymph nodes to check for cancer spread. Breast surgery is often combined with other treatments like radiation or chemotherapy to ensure comprehensive care.

What is the role of a Breast surgeon?

To evaluate patients with breast complaints using clinical, radiological and pathological methods to diagnose the condition appropriately and based on that advise the appropriate course of treatment.
Breast reconstruction may be advised  after some breast surgeries  to restore breast shape and symmetry. Women with excessively large breasts are evaluated and advised for breast reduction to relieve physical pain and improve self-esteem. Patients experiencing changes in breast appearance after pregnancy or aging can be advised to consider breast lifts or augmentation.

What are some common problems that may require seeking a Breast Surgeon?

Common problems that may require the expertise of a breast surgeon include:

Breast Cancer: Surgery is often necessary to remove cancerous tumors and axillary lymph nodes, which may involve procedures like lumpectomy or removal of entire breast like mastectomy.
Benign Tumors: Noncancerous tumors, such as fibroadenomas or papillomas, require removal if they increase in size, have discomfort or concern for physical appearance.
Breast Reconstruction: Following a mastectomy, many women opt for reconstruction to restore breast shape and symmetry, using implants or tissue from other body areas. Nipple discharge and Dilated ducts require removal of single or multiple ducts of the ductal system.
Breast Reduction: Women with excessively large breasts may seek reduction surgery to alleviate physical discomfort and improve quality of life.
Cosmetic Enhancement: Procedures like breast augmentation and lifts are cosmetic interventions performed to enhance appearance and restore volume lost due to aging or pregnancy.
Genetically at Risk for Cancer: If you have multiple family members diagnosed with breast cancer or certain risk factors, you may need to get regular checkups done and see a breast surgeon.
